NEW CASTLE, Pa. --The Pennsylvania State Police will conduct a sobriety checkpoint within Lawrence County this week. The checkpoint is part of the governor's initiative to reduce crashes, prevent injuries and save lives. Locations will be determined through up-to-date crash data collected by the department's computer system. They will focus on areas with high numbers of DUI-related crashes.
Winter Fun Days
JAMESTOWN, Pa. -- Winter Fun Days, a free family event, is Feb. 4-5 at Pymatuning State Park on Pa. Route 322 just north of Jamestown. This is the 30th year for the winter festival. There will be horse- and tractor-drawn hayrides, children's activities, crafts and sled riding. The Lions Club's hole-in-one golf contest, ice fishing and ice safety demonstrations by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission are planned. The pavilion opens at 6 a.m. for breakfast, and trails in the park will be open if the snow is at least 4 inches deep. The event will be held regardless of the weather.
Downtown with the arts
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown Police Chief Jimmy Hughes will discuss downtown matters at the next meeting of Youngstown Arts & amp; Entertainment District Association at 6 p.m. Feb. 8 in the Ohio One Building auditorium, 25 E. Boardman St., second floor. Hunter Morrison, director of the Center for Urban and Regional Studies at Youngstown State University, also will speak on YSU's plans to expand into the downtown entertainment district. Refreshments will be served at 5:30 p.m.
Free training classes
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Governor's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives and Ohio Community Action Training will offer free training classes and grant-sub-awards through the Ohio Compassion Capital Project. A session is planned from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 28 at Oakhill Renaissance Center, 345 Oakhill Ave., Entrance B. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. The program is free and limited to 35 participants. Registration is required; call toll-free (866) 335-0016. OCCP provides training, collaborative opportunities and one-on-one technical assistance at no cost to faith-based and grass-roots community organizations in Ohio counties. The project provides up to $10,000 in grants for capacity-building activities for faith- and community-based organizations throughout the state.
Lincoln Day Dinner
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- The Grand Olde Republican Committee of Mercer County will host its annual Lincoln Day Dinner on Feb. 25. Republicans will gather at the Hickory VFW to greet candidates and discuss politics. Social hour will begin at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m. U.S. Rep. Phil English of Erie, R-3rd, will be the speaker. All candidates attending are encouraged to take their petitions for signatures. A pre-dinner reception is planned at Mary Spangler's home in West Middlesex.
