YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown city schools will have parental information meetings on its open enrollment program for the 2006-07 school year. Applications for enrollment in Youngstown schools will be available at the meetings or at the board of education office at 20 W. Wood St. Those seeking enrollment must submit completed applications to the board office by Feb. 28. The list of meetings is: Chaney High School auditorium, 4 p.m. Wednesday; Irene Ward Building, 20 W. Wood St., 10 a.m. Thursday; Wilson High School cafeteria, 4 p.m. Thursday; and The Rayen High School Family Readiness Center Room 110, 4 p.m. Friday.
Barron to speak on autism
CHAMPION -- Sean Barron, a Vindicator news correspondent and co-author of "There's a Boy In Here: Emerging From Autism," will speak to parents and educators about his personal experience with autism at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Champion Central Elementary School gymnasium. Barron was diagnosed with autism in 1965 and has traveled across the country and to Europe for the past 10 years speaking to civic, church and social organizations about his experience. He co-authored the book with his mother, Judy Barron, to help other families know the pain of childhood memories and the terror, confusion and isolation.
Prayer service set
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ursuline High School will celebrate Catholic Schools Week with a prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Friday with music performed by El Fuego, the Ursuline Liturgical Choir. Dr. Mary Lou DiPillo, an associate dean in the Beeghly College of Education at Youngstown State University and a 1967 Ursuline graduate, will reflect on the Gospel. In the spirit of St. Angela Merici, founder of the Ursuline Sisters, students will bring donations of soap to stock Angela's Place, an AIDS ministry pantry at the Ursuline Center. As a symbol of Ursuline's commitment to compassion, character and values, each pupil will be given a shamrock lapel pin.
Donating to Wigs for Kids
CANFIELD -- When Megan Gocala, 8, a second-grader at C.H. Campbell School, was just 4, her 3-year-old cousin, Lexie Pogany of Cincinnati, was diagnosed with leukemia. Megan saw pictures of Lexie, who had lost her hair because of her cancer treatments. After learning about the Wigs for Kids program, Megan decided to let her own hair grow long so she could donate it to the program that makes wigs for seriously ill children who lose their hair because of medical treatments. Megan recently made good on her decision by donating 8 inches of her blond hair to the program. Lexie no longer needs the hair for herself. She's 7 and is doing well with her own full head of blond hair.
Going to leadership forum
LIBERTY -- Janell Heggins, daughter of Bobby and Pamela Heggins and a student at Liberty High School, has been selected to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on Law in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 7-12. Her goal is to become a lawyer, and she is enrolled in honors classes at Liberty where she is a member of the Marching and Symphonic Band, the Pep Club and the bowling team. She has also competed in basketball, volleyball and track. She attends Christian Revival Discipleship Center.
College Club to meet
SHARON, Pa. -- The College Club of Sharon will meet at 10 a.m. Feb. 11 in the fellowship hall of First Presbyterian Church, 600 E. State St. for a brunch meeting. The meeting will honor past presidents and honorary College Club members. After the meeting, Mark DiLorenzo, owner of DiLorenzo's Catering and Deli Inc. in Sharpsville, will give a cooking demonstration. Members attending should contact Rosann Rookey at (724) 347-7224 by Friday. Vivian Evans, Ethel Stahl, Sue Mattson and Joan Walker will provide hospitality. Howland team takes first
WARREN -- A team from Howland Middle School took top honors in the Trumbull County Educational Service Center's annual Elementary Prep Bowl competition. This academic competition engaged pupils in various grade levels in a contest to answer questions from all areas of study. Girard Intermediate School was the runner up.
Grant to buy ID kits
NILES -- City police have received a $700 law enforcement grant from Target department stores to buy child identification kits for kindergarten and first-grade pupils. The kits provide a record for parents of their child's fingerprints, DNA and photograph. Police have ordered the kits and will distribute them when they arrive.
