Editor will speak to history group

NILES -- Jon Baker, a former copy editor for The Vindicator, will be the guest speaker at the annual dinner meeting of the Niles Historical Society on April 26.
Baker has been the editorial page editor of The Times-Reporter in New Philadelphia, Ohio, since Jan. 1. He has written a history column for that newspaper for many years and is the author of four books about the history of southern Ohio locations.
His topic will be the Nugent family of actors whose patriarch, J.C. Nugent, was born in Niles. The meeting will take place in the Niles Masonic Temple on Church Street.
Jessie Scott was recently re-elected president of the historical society. Also re-elected were Roselyn Watson, vice president; Nancy Malone, secretary; Ruth Van Huffel, treasurer; and Frank Burke, assistant treasurer. Newly elected corresponding secretary is Betty Whitney.
The historical society is responsible for the upkeep of the Ward-Thomas Museum at 503 Brown St. The museum is open to the public from 2-5 p.m. on the first Sunday of each month and for group tours at other times. The next open house is set for Feb. 5, Super Bowl Sunday.
