3 recycling sites open
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown Litter & amp; Recycling, in partnership with Mahoning County, has opened three new recycling drop-off sites. The new site are the McGuffey Plaza on McGuffey Road, Re-Nu Technologies at 168 S. Meridian Road and the Martin Luther Lutheran Church at 420 Clearmont Ave. The sites are open during daylight hours. The recycling sites accept No. 1 through 5 plastics, glass bottles, metal food and beverage containers, corrugated cardboard, and all paper publications, including magazines and telephone books.
Preservation meeting
NILES -- Niles Mosquito Creek Preservation Club will meet at 10 a.m. Feb. 4 at Steven's Park youth cabin. An upcoming motorcycle ride to benefit Kennedy Park, the Mosquito Creek Preservation Fund and projects in and around the creek will be discussed.
Recycling collection set
COLUMBIANA -- The next paper and aluminum recycling collection at Crestview High School will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday in the high school parking lot. Paper items collected are newspapers, magazines, phone books, catalogs, paperback books, hard-cover books, school and office paper, junk mail and cardboard of all types. It is helpful if paper items are separated by type, but it is not required. Paper items can be packed into brown paper bags, smaller plastic bags or smaller cardboard boxes. Clean aluminum cans can be brought in larger plastic bags.
McKinley's birthday fete
NILES -- President William McKinley's 163rd birthday will be celebrated beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday at the McKinley Birthplace Home and Research Center, 40 S. Main St. It is the actual site of his birth Jan. 29, 1843. There will be tours of the replicated home, where visitors can hear about his childhood in Niles and his adventures as a boy. There will also be activities for children. A birthday cake, cookies and punch will be served.
Zoning post open
HOWLAND -- The township is accepting applications for the position of assistant zoning administrator. Applicants must have an undergraduate degree, preferably in city planning, public administration or related field. Family Service officers
YOUNGSTOWN -- Family Service Agency, a nonprofit mental health agency serving Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, recently elected officers to its board of trustees. They are: Phyllis Friedman, chairwoman; VickiThompson, first vice chairwoman; Myra Vitto, second vice chairwoman; John D'Onofrio, treasurer; and Suzanne Winick, secretary. Margaret Gittis, a former board chairwoman and a trustee for 16 years, was elected an honorary member.
Assembling afghans
Volunteers are needed at 11 a.m. Saturday at all area Pat Catan's Craft Centers to help assemble donated afghan squares into completed afghans for the Warm Up America Foundation. The afghans will be donated to victims of natural disasters, battered women's shelters, the homeless and others less fortunate. Area Pat Catan centers are in Warren and Boardman, and in Hermitage, Pa.
