LISBON -- A man has been sent to prison for having sexual contact with a girl when she 4 to 6 years old.
Judge David Tobin of Columbiana County Common Pleas Court sentenced Timothy M. Geary, now 25, of Wintersville, to 10 years in prison at a Friday hearing.
The judge also designated Geary as a sexual predator, which means after his release from prison he will have to register with law enforcement authorities where he lives, works or attends school.
Tim McNicol, an assistant county prosecutor, said the various acts in the indictment "cover an extensive period of time and multiple offenses."
McNicol also pointed out the victim was "a preschool child." The abuse took place from 2003 through 2005 in Wellsville.
Pleaded guilty
Geary pleaded guilty to rape, a first-degree felony. A presentence investigation report made after his plea showed Geary has no other criminal record.
But McNicol noted that in the report, Geary said he had done nothing wrong.
The mother of the victim, who knew Geary, read a statement before the sentencing that described him as "a monster."
"We have suffered so much because of what you put my daughter through," the woman said.
The mother said the girl will never be free of the assaults.
"You should be doing a lifetime [in prison]," the woman said. "I hope you hurt every hour, every day, and every minute for the rest of your life."
Before Judge Tobin imposed the sentence, Geary said he was sorry for what he did. "I made lots of bad choices," he added.
Geary said he would use his time in prison to become "a better part of society."
