Homeowners escape injury in blaze

YOUNGSTOWN -- A Jacobs Road couple escaped injury in a fire that caused an estimated $12,000 to $18,000 loss to their home.
Firefighters responded around 7 p.m. Friday to 631 Jacobs Road along McKelvey Lake on the city's East Side. Tim McGarry, a Youngstown Fire Department battalion chief, said the homeowner, his wife and the family dog were outside the house when firefighters arrived.
The couple did not want to be identified, and they were uninjured. They said they did not intend to leave the damaged house.
McGarry said the fire started near a wood-burning stove on the upper floor of the 1 1/2-story, wood-frame house. The couple smelled smoke, and were unable to go upstairs, he said.
The fire heavily damaged the upper portion of the house, and there is smoke and water damage throughout, he said. Firefighters returned to the station around 8:45 p.m.
