PALM DESERT, Calif. -- Chad Campbell shot a 4-under 68 on Friday to take a four-stroke lead after the third round of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.
Campbell, coming off a second-place tie last week in the Sony Open in Hawaii, had a 19-under 197 total in the 90-hole event. He had his first bogey of the tournament on his 17th hole of the day, No. 8 on the Arnold Palmer Course at PGA West, to end a string of 60 consecutive holes without a bogey.
Scott Verplank (65) and John Senden (68) were tied for second. Phil Mickelson, the 2002 and 2004 winner who is making his first start of the year, had a 68 that left him six shots back at 13 under in a fourth-place tie with Pat Perez (70).
Women's World Cup
SUN CITY, South Africa -- Annika Sorenstam and Liselotte Neumann shot a 7-under 65 in best-ball play to give the Swedes a share of the first-round lead with South Korea's Meena Lee and Bo Bae Song in the Women's World Cup.
Sorenstam and Neumann each had four birdies on the Gary Player Country Club course.
Taiwan's Amy Hung and Yu-Ping Lin were two strokes back, and Americans Paula Creamer and Natalie Gulbis were fourth after a 68.
The 20 two-player teams will play an alternate-shot round Saturday, and the season-opening event will close Sunday with stroke play.
MasterCard Championship
KAUPULEHU, Hawaii -- Tom Watson, Loren Roberts and Don Pooley matched the course record with 9-under 63s in calm conditions to share the first-round lead in the Champions Tour's season-opening MasterCard Championship.
Watson, Roberts and Pooley tied the Hualalai record set by Tom Kite in 2002 and also matched by Fuzzy Zoeller (2003) and Craig Stadler (2004).
Curtis Strange, a late replacement for the ailing Lee Trevino, opened with a 64. Strange received one of four sponsor exemptions for the event limited to major champions in the last five years and other tournament winners in the last two years.
Ben Crenshaw, also playing on a sponsor exemption, joined 2004 MasterCard champion Zoeller and Jim Thorpe at 65. Only two of the 35 players failed to break par and the field averaged 67.54 strokes on the Jack Nicklaus-designed course.
Abu Dhabi Golf Championship
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates -- South Africa's Charl Schwartzel shot a 6-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead in the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship.
Schwartzel had a 9-under 135 total. Denmark's Soren Hansen and Argentina's Ricardo Gonzalez (68) were tied for second, Vijay Singh (68) and Chris DiMarco (67) topped a group at 6 under, and Sergio Garcia (69) was 5 under. John Daly (75) missed the cut.
