Fire destroys apartment
GIRARD -- A Girard woman who fell asleep with a candle burning on a table next to her awoke when her couch caught fire, city firefighters said. The woman escaped with only burns to her feet. She knocked on the doors of other apartments in the building at 504 Park Ave., and those people left the building unharmed. Firefighters put out the fire just before 4 p.m. Monday. The woman's apartment was destroyed and four others sustained smoke damage.
Kitchen fire in Warren
WARREN -- City firefighters extinguished a kitchen fire at 2346 Cranwood Drive S.W. but not before the blaze destroyed the front part of the house and melted some siding at 2356 Cranwood Drive S.W. Firefighters said the fire started in the kitchen about 2 a.m. Monday when something was left cooking on the stove. Residents escaped unharmed. No damage estimate was available.
ACT prep workshop

Huston Road closed
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Huston Road, where it crosses over Interstate 76 in Lawrence County, is closed for the construction of a bridge. A new concrete box beam structure will replace the steel girder bridge and is expected to be open by November. Traffic is being detoured to Beaver Dam Road, Pa. Route 551 and Pa. Route 351. The detour is about five miles.
Winter nature walk
VILLA MARIA, Pa. -- EverGreen will have a winter nature walk from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday on the nature trails at Villa Maria Community Center, Evergreen Road, with Bill Whitehouse, naturalist emeritus of Mill Creek MetroParks in Youngstown. Participants will observe animal tracks and habitats and learn how to identify trees.

Weathersfield trusteesname new chairman
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Township trustees recently named John Vogel chairman and newly elected trustee William Miller vice chairman.
Trustees also approved an amended 2006 certificate of resources totaling $4,438,278, which Clerk David Rouhan said is a little higher than last year, mainly because of two state issue 2 projects in the township: installation of a waterline on Austintown-Warren Road and widening, paving and drainage for a safety upgrade on part of Niles-Carver Road.
Financial aid workshop
STRUTHERS -- Struthers High School is hosting a financial aid workshop at 7 p.m. Thursday in the high school cafeteria.
Elaine Ruse, director of scholarships and financial aid at Youngstown State University, will be the guest speaker. Scholarship information will be made available to those attending.
7th Ward meeting
YOUNGSTOWN -- Matthew Hufnagel, director of sales and marketing for the Chevrolet Centre, will be the speaker at the monthly meeting of the 7th Ward Citizens Coalition at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Brownlee Woods Presbyterian Church. The meeting is open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
