Mahoning Valley loses to Cleveland in Parma

The Barons have won seven in a row and 15 of their last 16.
PARMA -- The Cleveland Barons blanked the Mahoning Valley Phantoms 2-0 at Lakefront Lines Arena Saturday night in a North American Hockey League game that featured 17 combined power plays and more goals that were waived off than were scored.
In the end, the Phantoms' inability to finish off scoring chances, combined with good goaltending from Cleveland's Kenny Reiter, proved to be the difference.
Cleveland (23-12-4) has won seven in a row and 15 of their last 16 games. The teams conclude their three-game series tonight at The Ice Zone at 7 p.m.
Had opportunities
The Phantoms had numerous opportunities to jump ahead early, including three power plays, but they couldn't take advantage.
In the second period, the Barons threw 16 shots at Phantoms goalie Ryan Zapolski and he stopped them all, including two spectacular saves.
On their 34th shot, the Barons solved Zapolski. Defenseman Trent Bonnett prevented what would have been a two-on-one Phantoms break by pokechecking the puck away from Mike Maltese at the Cleveland blue line. Leonard then took the puck and dumped it into the Phantoms zone on the left faceoff circle.
Gathering the puck in the faceoff dot, Thomas Petruska slowed as he approached Zapolski, who hugged the lower half of the near side post. Petruska saw what little open space Zapolski had above his right shoulder, but still threaded the puck into the upper left corner for his 14th goal of the season and a 1-0 lead at the 6:10 mark of the third period.
Matters in own hands
The Barons captain and the league's leading scorer would then take matters into his own hands and added an insurance tally.
Carter Camper took a clearing pass from Petruska at center ice and steered it past Anthony Ciraulo. He then skated in one-on-one from the left wing. Camper shifted gears and managed to navigate himself around defenseman Doug Leaverton and position himself in front of Zapolski. He snapped the puck through for his 24th goal of the season, tied for second best in the NAHL, with 10:15 remaining in regulation.
Zapolski made 40 saves.
