Gov. Taft appoints local woman

Her appointment gives the Mahoning Valley input at the state level.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Maureen A. Drummond, program director for the Volunteer Services Agency here, has been appointed by Gov. Bob Taft to serve on the Ohio Community Service Council for a term ending 2007.
The Mahoning Valley will benefit from her appointment to the council by having a direct connection to the state-level council, which determines the way volunteerism looks on the state level, how its valued, what the trends are, and how to solve social problems through volunteerism, said Drummond.
"It is truly an honor to represent the Mahoning Valley at the state level, and to tell our story to the people who may in the future control dollars," Drummond said.
Council activities
The Ohio Community Service Council, established to administer grants under the federal National and Community Service Trust Act of 1993, focuses on four major activities: AmeriCorps, America's domestic Peace Corps; Homeland Security/Ohio Citizen Corps, a community-based initiative to engage all citizens in homeland security; Ohio Civic Education and Participation Initiative; and promoting and supporting volunteerism and community service, with programs such as Make A Difference Day Ohio.
As VSA program director, Drummond is responsible for the leadership, supervision and evaluation of program staff, volunteers and contract workers, developing and implementing program plans and promoting agency programs to the community.
A native of Youngstown and a Youngstown State University alumna, she lives in Ellsworth with her husband, David Scannell.
Drummond began working in volunteer administration in 1985 at long-term health care facilities and adult day centers, and later in acute care health settings.
Since that time, she has directed other volunteer programs including the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Mahoning and Southern Trumbull County.
Active in the community, she serves on the Points of Light Foundation and Volunteer Center National Network Faith and Service Task Force, the Eastern Ohio Area Health Education Center Board of Directors. She is a member of the national and Ohio RSVP Directors Associations and the Youngstown Rotary.
