Ken Brayer to scoregame for 50th year
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ken Brayer of Youngstown will be the official scorer for the YSU men's and women's basketball doubleheader today at Beeghly Center, marking the 50th year that he has scored or announced a game for the Penguins.
A 1961 Youngstown College graduate, Brayer began his association with YSU as a senior at Campbell Memorial High School.
Chuck Perazich, the late Vindicator sports editor and former YSU sports information director, contacted Brayer in the summer of 1955 about filling the role as Penguins' scorekeeper.
Basketballdoubleheader
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State men's and women's basketball team will take part in another Horizon League doubleheader today at Beeghly Center.
The YSU women (4-11, 0-4 Horizon League) will play host to defending Horizon League champion UW-Green Bay (10-3, 3-0 Horizon) in the opener at 5:15 p.m.
The women are coming off a 64-59 loss against UW-Milwaukee on Thursday night, their fourth straight loss.
The YSU men's team (5-10, 2-3 Horizon) will go up against Cleveland State (5-8, 1-3 Horizon) in the second game at 7:35 p.m.
The Penguins lost another close game on Thursday, falling to Wright State 64-60 at home.
Cleveland State is coming off a 59-53 overtime victory against Detroit in Cleveland on Thursday.
Swimmingtime changed
AKRON -- Today's swimming and diving meet between YSU and Akron at Ocasek Natatorium in Akron will begin at 2 p.m.
The meet was originally scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

Canfield-Nilesgame moved
CANFIELD -- The Metro Athletic Conference girls basketball game between Canfield and Niles has been moved from Jan. 21 to Jan. 23.
The Canfield freshman girls team will play Howland at 4:30 p.m., followed by the Canfield-Niles junior varsity game, then the Canfield-Niles varsity contest.
Kenyon 68, Hiram 65
HIRAM -- Korey Haddox's 3-pointer with three seconds remaining gave Kenyon College a 68-65 college basketball win over Hiram College Thursday night.
Bryan Yelvington scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Lords (4-10, 1-4 North Coast Conference).
Matt Formato had 15 points.
Haddox finished with 11 and Allen Bediako had 10 rebounds for Kenyon.
Hiram (3-11, 1-4) led 34-32 at the half, but Josh Klinger tied it to touch off a 17-11 run that gave the Lords a 6-point lead with 12:48 left.
The Terriers regained the lead about 6 minutes later and held it until Yelvington hit a 3-pointer that gave the Lords a 65-63 lead with 1:33 left.
Emeka Mbanefo led Hiram with 11 points off the bench.
A.J. White, Michael McDevitt and T.C. Spencer all had 10 points.
Westminster football honors
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- A pair of Westminster College football standouts have been selected to the NCAA Division III All-America teams by Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette.
Senior nose tackle Ryan Chmura (Mohawk High School) has been selected to the first team and senior center B.A. Lambie was a third team selection.
Both players were to the Hansen's All-South Region team earlier this week.
Chmura posted 83 total tackles (27 solo, 56 assisted) in 2005, while also ranking among the Presidents' Athletic Conference leaders in tackles for losses (15) and quarterback sacks (5).
Chmura is the first Westminster player to earn first team All-America honors since defensive back Nick Roberts was an NAIA first team All-American in 1997.
Lambie was an All-PAC first team selection and was named All-South Region second team by D3Football.com.
Thiel football
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel College senior offensive tackle Dave Hendricks was named first team All-American by Don Hansen's Football Gazette.
Also named All-Americans were senior wide receiver Brandon Chambers (Farrell) and sophomore running back Steve Minton, both to the Hansen honorable mention team.
84 Lumber Classic moved to June
FARMINGTON, Pa. -- The 84 Lumber golf Classic will move from September to June beginning in 2007 as part of a new six-year agreement with the PGA Tour.
Tournament officials made the announcment Friday.
The 3-year-old tournament is head at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort & amp; Spa, about 50 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.
It was started by 84 Lumber founder Joe Hardy, a billionaire who has made no secret of his desire to make his tournament a more high profile event.
The tournament is scheduled for Sept. 11-17 this year. Next year, it will be held June 18-24, a week after the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, just outside of Pittsburgh, and be televised by CBS.
