Rev. Simon honored at civil rights center
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Rev. Lonnie K.A. Simon, pastor emeritus of New Bethel Baptist Church here and civil rights activist, has a brick inscribed with his name at the Civil Rights Memorial Center in Montgomery, Ala.
The center, which is near the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, recognizes those killed in the fight for racial justice in the United States. The center examines the civil rights era and features exhibits and interactive activities. The dedication of the center took place Oct. 23.
The Rev. Mr. Simon also received a certificate listing his name on the Wall of Tolerance. The digital display reveals the names of people who have pledged to take a stand against hate, injustice and intolerance. The certificate bears the signature of Rosa Parks.
Mr. Simon participated in the Selma-to-Montgomery voting rights march with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1965.
