Fast start, Hartman are reasons Vikings prevail
BROOKFIELD -- Danny Hartman scored 23 points -- including 17 in the first half -- as the LaBrae High basketball team defeated Brookfield, 78-53.
LaBrae took a 46-29 halftime lead in the Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Eric Hart added 11 points while Corey Gray and Kyle Rowan each had 10 for the Vikings.
Josh Harkulich had 17 points, while Cory Richards and Chris Bombeck each had 14 for the Warriors.
Newton Falls 40, Champion 37
NEWTON FALLS -- Junior strong forward Matt Dillon had 17 points to lead a smaller Newton Falls team in a defensively well-played game.
The Tigers are 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the TAC.
Tyler Kish had 10 points for Champion.
Hubbard 48, Girard 46 OT
HUBBARD -- Corey Hitt scored 12 points and Frank Rosile added 10 to lead Hubbard, which outscored Girard 6-4 in overtime in a TAC game.
Jon Smerchansky and Sean Mostov each had 10 points for Girard (1-8, 1-2).
Lordstown 60, Mathews 40
Vienna -- Despite taking a 15-8 first-quarter lead, Lordstown still had to overcome Mathews' pressure before relying on a strong second half in the Northeastern Athletic Conference game.
Senior Brandon Wickline, a 6-2 post player, had a season-best 20 points while senior Hugo Mendez added 17.
Mendez, a point guard who didn't play last year, is starting to get into the flow of the game. Twelve of his points came in the second half, as did 11 of Wickline's points.
Also for Lordstown, sophomore Jake Dieugenio scored 14 points and Mendez and Nate Rech each had seven rebounds. Mendez also dished out seven assists.
For Mathews, Josh Collier had 16 points and Nick Ocheltree 15 points.
