Police probe thefts at student apartments

One break-in took place on Christmas Day.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University police are investigating the thefts of about $3,730 worth of property from Ambling University Courtyard Apartments, 91 Wick Oval, during YSU's winter break.
On Dec. 23, a resident reported that a laptop computer, iPod, four shirts and perfume were missing. She had been gone from her apartment for about eight hours. The loss was estimated at $1,755, according to the police report.
There was no sign of forced entry, and the victim said none of her roommates was present in the apartment.
YSU Police Lt. Mark Adovasio said the investigation of the Dec. 23 theft was pending interviews with students who could have been in the building during the thefts. He said most of the students were home for the winter break.

Meanwhile, someone stole computers, electronics and DVDs from another suite Dec. 25. Loss was estimated at $1,975 to three residents of the apartment, police said.
A police report said YSU officers observed a screen damaged on the north side of the building around 11 p.m. Christmas Day. Upon checking closer, it was determined four screens had been cut by someone attempting to gain entry into the suite. The report indicated the residents were home for the holidays.
Adovasio said YSU police are trying to identify suspects caught on surveillance tape during the Dec. 25 burglary. Adovasio said that it looked as though the thieves knew the area well, and that he thought they were either former residents or frequent visitors to the apartments.
