EAST SIDE Official's son keeps track of robbery suspect

The 18-year-old suspect is expected to be arraigned on numerous charges today.
YOUNGSTOWN -- A councilman's son walked with an armed robbery suspect until police arrived and ordered both men to the ground.
"It was scary for my son," Annie Gillam, wife of Councilman Artis Gillam Sr., D-1st, said Tuesday.
"My son was shook up when police put a gun in his face."
She said Lt. William Powell didn't know that her 42-year-old son, Arnold, had been walking with the robber to keep track of him. She said she approached and identified her son to Powell, who had ordered both men to the ground.
Police arrested Devron Pinkard, 18, of Park Vista Drive on charges of aggravated robbery, kidnapping and carrying a concealed weapon. He was expected to be arraigned today in municipal court.
Annie Gillam said she and her son were among several people -- including tree cutters and a beer truck driver -- who tried to keep an eye on the robbery suspect until police arrived.
Driver robbed
The robbery took place close to Gillam and Associates' office on the East Side around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Annie Gillam said she saw a car in the intersection of McGuffey Road and Dryden Street with its door open. The driver told her he'd just been robbed and the suspect was walking away. She called 911.
"We had all kinds of people looking for him," Annie Gillam said. "I got in my car to follow."
She said her son, who had just gone outside, saw the suspect and began walking with him. The suspect said he'd give the money back, she said, quoting what the man told her son.
"My son didn't see his gun -- police found it in his pocket," Annie Gillam said.
