Akron 69, W. Michigan 55
KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Nick Dials scored 15 points, leading four Akron players who reached double figures, as the Zips defeated Western Michigan on Tuesday night. The victory was the fourth straight for Akron (9-3, 3-0 Mid-American Conference), which is off to its best start since 2000 and hadn't beaten Western since February 2000. Dru Joyce and Rob Preston each scored 11 points for Akron, and Matt Futch added 10. Joyce had a season-high nine assists. Joe Reitz led Western (4-9, 1-2) with 14 points despite playing just six minutes in the first half and 26 total due to foul trouble. Walk-on Derek Fracalossi added a career-high 12 points. The Broncos, usually 66.7 percent accurate on free throws, hit 11-of-25 (44 percent) and five times missed double free throws. Brian Snider was one of two starters who didn't convert any, going 0-for-4. Akron hit 19-of-24 free throws, led by Dials' 7-of-8. The Zips also outrebounded Western 39-36, led by a game-high eight each from Romeo Travis and Nate Linhart.
Western trimmed a 13-point Akron lead to three with 11:55 left on consecutive 3-pointers by Snider, but a 16-5 run put the Zips back up by 14 points with 7:45 left.
Toledo 73, Buffalo 70
TOLEDO -- Toledo raced out to a 27-6 lead and held on for a 73-70 win over Buffalo for the Rockets' first Mid-American Conference win. Justin Ingram had 16 points and led three other Toledo players in double-digit scoring. Toledo (8-4, 1-3 MAC) led 33-16 at the half and was up by 22 points early in the second. But Buffalo (11-3, 1-2) outscored the Rockets 54-40 in the second half, cutting Toledo's lead to 3 with 14 seconds left. Kashif Payne hit three free throws down the stretch to put the game out of reach. He finished with 12 points for the Rockets, who also got 13 points from Florentino Valencia and 11 from Keonta Howell. Roderick Middleton had 22 points and Calvin Cage had 18 for the Bulls. Mario Jordan added 12 points, and Yassin Idbihi scored 11. Toledo outscored Buffalo 21-7 from the bench and held the Bulls to 24 percent shooting in the first half.
The Rockets shot 58 percent overall to the Bulls' 43 percent.
Fairfield 85, Rider 81
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- Terrence Todd scored 26 points and had six assists to lead Fairfield over Rider 85-81 Tuesday night. Rider (4-8, 0-4 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) led 78-77 with 2:37 left before Fairfield went on a 6-0 run to take an 83-78 lead. Herbie Allen scored three points in the run, and 17 in the game, making all five of his 3-point shots.
Terrance Mouton and Edwin Muniz led Rider with 22 points apiece. Fairfield (4-8, 2-2 MAAC) surged to an early 28-17 lead before a 10-2 Rider run cut the lead to three, which remained the margin at halftime. Fairfield led 70-59 in the second half before the Broncs went on a 15-2 run, including six points by Muniz, to take a 74-72 lead with 4:10 left.
Davidson 85, The Citadel 49
DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Ian Johnson led five players in double figures with 16 points as Davidson routed The Citadel 85-49 Tuesday for its 27th straight conference victory. Brendan Winters added 15 points and seven rebounds, Jason Morton came off the bench to score 12, and Kenny Grant had a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists for the Wildcats (9-5, 3-0 Southern Conference). Thomas Sanders came of the bench to post 10 points.
