Teenager killed in head-on collision
MESOPOTAMIA -- A North Bloomfield teenager died at the scene, and a Mesopotamia man is in critical condition in a Cleveland hospital after a collision at noon Sunday on state Route 87 just east of the Geauga County line.
James G. Szilagyi Jr., 16, of Chaffee-Dodgeville Road, was killed in the accident. James was driving a westbound car and went left of center, passing another vehicle. He then drove into the path of an eastbound Jeep driven by William J. Wynn, 48, of Kinsman Road, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Wynn was taken to Geauga Community Hospital and then flown by helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.
In an attempt to avoid striking James, Wynn took evasive action and went left of center. But James drove back onto the right side of the road and hit the Jeep head-on, the patrol said.
The car James was driving then went off the right side of the road, hit a curb, overturned onto on its roof and caught fire, with James trapped inside as it became engulfed in flames.
