West Branch duo moves to semis
Andy Lamancusa and Nathan Sharp won two matches Friday.
AKRON -- Sophomore Sam Pearce of Poland has earned a spot for today's semifinals in the 130-pound weight class following two rounds of competition at the Division II district wrestling tournament Friday at Akron Firestone High.
Pearce beat Seth Lucas of Fairless, 2-0 and Evan Moritz of West Geauga, 6-0.
The Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary team was in first place in the standings with 55 points.
University School was second with 49 and Ravenna third with 42.5.
Area schools are: West Branch ninth with 24; Southeast tied for 10th with 21.5; Canfield tied for 15th with 18; Liberty tied for 22nd with 11; Girard tied for 35th with 4; and Salem tied for 36th with 2.
Unbeaten Andy Lamancusa (145) of West Branch quickly pinned Jarrod Nathanile of Springfield (38 seconds) and Trahdale Moore of Geneva in 28 seconds to remain unbeaten (34-0).
Warriors junior Nathan Sharp (31-1), a heavyweight, won a first-round match by pin over Joel Durbin of Akron Coventry in 22 seconds, then decisioned Nate Donze of Tallmadge, 11-5.
Craig Brown, 215, of Southeast won a pair of matches by decision as he beat Tyler Heil of Cleveland Benedictine 12-3 and Jake Carraher Geneva, 3-2.
Consolation wrestlers
Area wrestlers winning and losing matches to drop into consolation were: Shelton Morris, 103, of Southeast; Tony Cardiero, 103, of Girard; Nick Hoopes, 119, of West Branch; Clay Criss, 130, of West Branch; Kenny Colman, 145, of Southeast; and Jon Braham, 160, of Southeast.
Matches continue this morning at 9 a.m. with finals set for 6 p.m.
Results from the Division I tournament at Mentor High and the Division III tournament at Maple Heights High weren't available at press time.
Division I
In the Division I meet at Mentor High, six area wrestlers recorded a pair of wins to advance to the championship semifinals.
Tony Jameson (119), Nick Bodnar (140) and JJ Pankewicz (160) of Austintown Fitch, Kyle Leek (112) and Steve Wall (125), both of Howland, and Boardman's Justin Powell (215) are in the semifinals.
Perry leads the team standings with 65 points with Maple Heights in second with 551/2. Howland is fifth with 26.5, followed by Austintown Fitch with 25.5. Boardman is 15th with 17 points.
Division III
In the Division III meet at Maple Heights High, seven area wrestlers advanced to the championship semifinals.
Matt Mascioli (112), Ben Dierkes (140) and Mike Wiseman (152) of Jackson-Milton all posted a pair of wins to advance.
Also reaching the semifinals were Justin Miller (125), Brad Harnett (135) and Ross Tice (152) of Brookfield, Andrew Padach (130) of South Range.
Beachwood racked up 71 points to lead the team standings, just ahead of St. Peter Chanel with 67 and Berkshire with 601/2. Jackson-Milton is fifth with 49 points and Brookfieldsixth with 471/2.
