State offers Camp Cadet program information

HARRISBURG -- Boys and girls interested in learning more about law enforcement can get information about Pennsylvania's popular statewide Camp Cadet program on the Internet at www.psp.state.pa.us/campcadet, State Police Commissioner Jeffrey B. Miller said.
"The goal of Camp Cadet is to instill a positive attitude in young people toward the law enforcement profession," Miller said. "Kids who participate will have the opportunity to learn about the criminal justice system from a police cadet's point of view."
Miller said more than 20 one-week camps will be held this summer at locations across the state.
"The youths spend the week living in an atmosphere of an actual police training school," he said. "Camp Cadet stresses self-discipline, personal achievement and respect for the law. The experience is challenging, but also fun."
Generally, campers must be between 12 and 14 years old, although each camp sets its own age requirements. Meals, lodging and program activities are provided at no cost. Some camps may charge a small application fee to cover administrative costs.
"The camps are funded primarily through private and corporate donations," Miller said. "Adult staff members, typically, are law enforcement personnel who volunteer their time."
Information on the Camp Cadet program also is available by contacting local state police stations.
