Look back: Bowling stays in the blood

There's nothing like nostalgia.
That's why today's article looks back to March 1991 when a father-son/mother-daughter bowling article was published.
Portrait photos showing Chuck Cormell and his son, Chuckie, were accompanied by an article describing their closeness through bowling. The same for Linda Haefke and her daughter, Teri.
Both Cormell and Haefke took time to instruct their children at the alleys.
At the time, Cormell accompanied Chuckie, who was an 8-year-old in the Holiday Bantams. Chuckie was a St. Nicholas School student who also bowled in the Cool Dudes and Classy Ladies League at Holiday.
Chuckie, also known as J.R., has since graduated from Struthers High and Thiel College, where he majored in accounting.
"He's trying to get in with the government, but he's helping me for the time being," said Chuck Cormell, who owns Cormell Floors.
While Chuckie, who will turn 24 in April, gets valuable business experience under his father's wing, he also fills in for the LaVilla Sports Bar team in the Belchyk/Dr. Ferkula Classic at Holiday.
The knowledge his father imparted 15 years ago still lingers, although the young Cormell is more of a casual bowler.
"Believe it or not, he took a class in bowling at Thiel," Chuck Cormell said. "Maybe now that he's out of school, he may want to bowl full-time. It would be a nice addition to the team."
Haefke is top amateur
Teri Haefke, as a 12-year-old, got her training in Wedgewood's Juniors-B League. At the time, her mother was a parent-coach.
Teri has since ascended to the pinnacle of amateur women's bowling as the nation's top-average bowler.
Teri Haefke, now 26, was the WIBC's top-average bowler two years ago with 238. In the last two years, she's been tops in Ohio.
"I put in a lot of time around her," Linda Haefke said of following Teri to many states on the regional tour as her career progressed.
"Unfortunately, there's no women's tour, but I'd say she's very successful and it all paid off."
Teri has registered 26 perfect games and eight 800 sets. Her high of 853 came at Wedgewood in February 2005 when she had back-to-back 300s and a 253.
But rather than take credit for her daughter's success, Linda Haefke said that Teri "followed in her father's footsteps."
Jim Haefke still bowls twice a week and with Teri in a mixed league.
Linda, who works at Infocision in Austintown, is still bowling once a week, but has slowed down due to knee problems.
"I'm winding down, definitely," she said. "It's not that I want to, but my body's telling me I have to."
The Haefkes' oldest daughter, Tammy, 33, and son, James, 24, also bowl. Tammy had a 299 recently in Wedgewood Ladies Trio.
Steiner has 821
Joe Steiner had 821 in UAW-1112 Lucianno's Restaurant Men at Wedgewood Feb. 1 when a couple of 11-in-a-row games were rolled by Nick Terbovich (293) and Adam Barta (290).
Daryl Moses had 818 in Charlie's Service/R & amp; J Trucking at Holiday and Rob Vukovich Jr. had 802 in Max Belchyk/Dr. Ferkula Classic.
Bruce Curall's 290-809 paced Camelot Outdoorsmen on Feb. 15. The Balkan Home Improvement team won Outdoorsmen's third quarter with Dino and Tony Balkan, Matt and Dan Clipse, Mike Stitt and Don Morrison.
Bill Scannell started with 299 toward a 736 series in Thursday Senior Men at Wedgewood on Feb. 9.
Tammy Haefke's 299-(741)-963 topped Wedgewood Ladies Trio on Feb. 14. Meanwhile, Teri Haefke had 278-(725)-943 and Jennifer Gossett 278-(745)-925.
Teri Haefke also led Triple A at A-Plus Family Bowl with 268-749 on Feb. 16, when T. Wayne Robinson's 708 and Joe Nuzzo's 705 topped the Triple A men.
Third-quarter champs of F.D. Mason Classic at A-Plus were Five Alive of T. Wayne Robinson, G. "Hawk" Waker, Larry Bush, Chris Thellman and Willie Provitt.
Second-period winners in UAW 1112 Lucianno's Restaurant Men's League were: (Division I) - Preview Plus of Adam Barta, John Calo, Nick Evans, Steve Harper II, Ron Jones, Frank Tondo and Frank Tondo II and (Division II) - Haefke Incorporated of Artie Berquist, Doug Ennett, Carl Fisher, Jim Haefke, Jim Haefke II and Jeff Patterson.
Kathy's Kreative Kuts won Ladies' third quarter at Holiday.
