NOT READY TO QUIT: Mahoning County Republican Chairman Clarence Smith says he plans to seek re-election to a third four-year term when the party's precinct committee members vote sometime after the May 2 primary.
Republicans have made strides under Smith in nonpartisan races such as judicial and township trustee positions. But besides two-term Youngstown Councilman Richard Atkinson, no Republican has won a partisan race anywhere in the county during Smith's tenure as chairman.
The party failed this year to field candidates in the races for the Ohio 60th House District, Mahoning County commissioner, county auditor, and common pleas judge.
Although the local party has had little success, those running for statewide office consider Smith a must person to meet because he is generous with his money.
Even local candidates have benefited from Smith's contributions. During last year's Youngstown mayoral race Smith gave $20,000 to Jay Williams, who won the election as an independent.
