Rosemond qualifies in 1,000-meter race
TURIN, Italy -- Australian speedskater Emily Rosemond, the granddaughter of Helen and Ed Nester of Campbell, qualified for the quarterfinals in the short track 1,000-meter race Wednesday at the Winter Olympics.
Rosemond, 19, of Brisbane, placed second in one of eight heat races Wednesday in the 1,000 preliminaries to qualify for Saturday's quarterfinals.
Rosemond's time was 1 minute, 39.942 seconds to finish behind Choi Eun-Kyung of South Korea, who won the heat in 1:38.414.
The fastest time of the preliminaries was posted by Jin Sun-Yu of South Korea, who won her heat in 1:31.504.
Rosemond, the only Australian female speedskater in the Winter Olympics, will be among 16 quarterfinalists in the quarterfinals Saturday.
She is the daughter of Georgia (Nester) Caling, who is a graduate of Campbell Memorial and Youngstown State.
