Board moves ahead with plans to create Hall of Fame program

NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Springfield Board of Education is moving ahead with its plans to establish a Hall of Fame program.
Board member Max Heinl said initially the program will be designed to recognize individuals who have contributed to the district athletics such as athletes, coaches and sponsors. But he is hoping it can expand to include academic highlights as well.
"We're one of the few school districts that don't have a Hall of Fame," he said. "We've talked about it through the years, but getting it started has been the problem. But we have a lot to be proud of and I think that should be reflected."
On Tuesday, the school board agreed to form a committee to establish criteria for the nomination process and draft nomination forms for the program. The committee is to be made up of school board members, administrators, coaches, students and former students.
The board also moved to allow the girls soccer club at the high school to become an interscholastic sport. The club was established two years ago and is looking to be recognized by the Ohio High School Athletic Conference as an interscholastic sports team.
In other matters, the board to advertise for a 71-passenger school bus. Administrators explained the district tries to purchase one school bus a year.
