LATE SATURDAY SteelHounds lose in shootout, 5-4



Youngstown blew a 3-0 lead on Saturday at Rio Grande Valley.
HIDALGO, Texas -- The Youngstown SteelHounds couldn't hold a three-goal lead on Saturday and lost to Rio Grande Valley, 5-4, in a shootout.
The loss keeps Youngstown (19-27-3) 15 points behind Wichita (25-17-5) in the race for the Eastern Conference's final wild-card berth. Wichita has 17 games remaining.
Mario Chinelli scored a pair of goals and had an assist in the loss to the Killer Bees (22-20-5).
The Hounds gave up a season-high 51 shots on net. The shootout loss gave the Hounds points in five of their seven games (4-2-1) on their current eight-game road trip that concludes tonight in Forth Worth against the Brahmas.
Chris Shaffer put the SteelHounds ahead at 12:23 of the first period by scoring a goal assisted by Chris Richard and Jeff Christian. Their assists extended to their point streak to nine games.
After Chinelli's 12th goal made it 2-0, the SteelHounds added to their lead with a two-on-one rush that saw J.F. Labarre feed Jonathan Gagnon who slid the puck under goalie Kelly Dunbar for his 11th goal.
Bees rally
The Bees cut the gap to 3-1 at the 17:10 mark with a center-ice shot by Bill Newson that fooled SteelHounds goalie Simon St. Pierre.
The Killer Bees had not won this season when trailing after two periods but they used the momentum from their late second-period goal to mount a comeback.
Newson once again found the back of the net with a rush up the left wing that the shot was deflected off a SteelHounds defender by St. Pierre.
The Bees tied the game at the 16:49 mark when Bret DeCecco scored off a loose puck in front of the net.
He was assisted by Daymen Bencharski and Kurtis Dulle.
Youngstown answered quickly regaining the lead just 10 seconds later with Chinelli scoring off a nice feed from Labarre from behind the net.
Trailing 4-3, the Bees pulled their goaltender in the final 90 seconds then scored to force overtime.
The Bees outshot the Hounds 12-2 in the final period and finished the game with a 51-19 advantage.
After a scoreless overtime, the teams took the decision to a shootout which lasted a SteelHounds franchise record seven rounds. Trevor Weisgerber scored the game's deciding goal.
St. Pierre (5-7-1) finished the game with 46 saves.
The Bees outshot the Hounds 122-63 in the three games this season but managed just two victories.
Shaffer has points in the last three games (1-3=4).
The Hounds have scored 12 power play goals in 34 chances on their current road trip (35.3 percent).
