Frankle, Gilmour win OAC honors



Nick Frankle was named OAC men's swimmer of the year for the second time.
CLEVELAND -- Nick Frankle, a junior at Ohio Northern University from Canfield High, and Heather Gilmour, a freshman at John Carroll University from Howland High, were named Ohio Athletic Conference men's and women's swimmers of the year following their performances in the three-day OAC meet recently at JCU.
Frankle, who won the men's honor for the second consecutive time, was a five-time OAC champion for the second straight year, winning the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes and the 200 individual medley. He also swam on the 200- and 400-yard medley relays.
Frankle helped Ohio Northern win the men's team championship for a second consecutive year, while Gilmour was instrumental in putting JCU's women on top. The Blue Streak women reclaimed the crown after a year's absence.
The John Carroll women claimed six individual championships, three of which were won by Gilmour.
ONU's men had 158.5 points, John Carroll was runner-up with 118. Baldwin-Wallace scored 116, Mount Union 96.5 and Wilmington 43.
Following JCU's women with 159 points were B-W (140), ONU (128), Wilmington (62) and Mount Union (47).
Nick Frankle's times
Frankle won the 100 breast in 59.29, the 200 breast in an ONU record 2:10.24 and the 200 IM in 1:58.31. He also swept the 100 and 200 breast events in 2004 and 2005 and set an ONU record as a 12-time OAC champ.
He is currently ranked 17th nationally in the 100 breast, with an NCAA "B" cut and school-record 58.43 earlier this season.
The 400 free relay won in an ONU record 3:12.85, the 200 medley relay won in 1:38.40 and the 400 medley relay team won in 3:35.32.
The 200 free relay team earned All-OAC honors, finishing second in 1:27.33.
Frankle's brother, Robbie, won the 1,650 freestyle (16:53.95) and the 400 IM (4:19.01). The freshman was All-OAC in four events. He finished second in the 500 free (4:54.74) and was a member of the 200 free relay team.
Gilmour's times
Gilmour won the 200 freestyle (1:58.81), 500 freestyle (5:20.42) and 1,650 (18:35.19). She was also on all four JCU runner-up relay teams: 200, 400 and 800 freestyle and the 400 medley relay.
Her swimmer of the year selection marked the sixth time a Blue Streak has earned the honor.
The Frankles and Gilmour swam together at the Eastwood "Y" in Niles for several years.
In the 200 freestyle relay, Gilmour's teammates were Liz Morris, Rebecca Gilewicz and Andrea Kovacs. Their runner-up time was 1:42.67.
Other 400 free relay members who were second (3:44.16) were: Kovacs, Gilewicz and Morris. The 800 free relay swimmers who were second in 8:14.92 were Melissa Anderson, Danielle McGrath and Morris.
Gilmour's 400 medley relay members were Anderson, Danielle McGrath and Morris. They were second in 4:11.72.
