Officer thwarts scam
YOUNGSTOWN -- An off-duty police officer reported that he was the target of a phone scam at his home number. The officer said the female caller from "TLR" told him Monday that he'd written a bad check for $302 at Wal-Mart in December and she needed his bank account number to straighten out the matter. Her number showed up as blocked, and she refused when he asked for the number so he could call her back. She then became irate when he refused to give any information and hung up. The officer said his bank account was in good order and he had not written a check to Wal-Mart. He said it sounded like the woman was calling from a call center because he could hear other people on phones.
