Limestone quarry sellsrecord 1.4 million tons
NORTH LIMA -- East Fairfield Coal Co. set a record by selling 1.4 million tons of limestone from its quarry. It was the fourth time in five years that the company topped 1 million tons.
This year, the company projects sales of 1.6 million to 1.8 million tons.
The company intends to have a new quarry operating by midsummer. This quarry will have double the capacity of the current quarry, the company said.
East Fairfield added two new pieces of equipment last year to improve its efficiency -- an underground crusher and front-end loader. The new crusher can handle larger stone, while the new loader will transport materials more quickly.
This new equipment helped the company avoid price increases at the start of the year, even though fuel and steel prices have increased.
