Bellefontaine Examiner wins top Ohio honor
COLUMBUS (AP) -- The Bellefontaine Examiner, owned by five generations of the Hubbard family, received the Ohio Newspaper Association's top award Thursday for its commitment to newspaper publishing and community journalism.
ONA President Tom Smith presented the First Families of Ohio Newspapers award to Jon Hubbard, vice president and general manager for the Examiner, during the ONA's annual convention.
Hubbard's mother, Mrs. T.E. Hubbard, is the publisher, and his son, T.J. Hubbard, is assistant general manager.
The family started in publishing when brothers Thomas A. Hubbard Sr. and William Hubbard began the weekly Bellefontaine Gazette in 1847. Thomas Hubbard's sons started the Daily Examiner in 1891.
The Bellefontaine Examiner, renamed in 1949, is published Monday through Saturday and has a circulation of about 9,200.
The award, established in 1996, recognizes service and achievement in corporate ownership with family origins.
