SCOUTS
Three earn Eagle award
Jeff Cowles and Robbie DeLost, both of Poland, and Andrew Cerritelli of New Middletown all have attained the highest award in Boy Scouts by receiving the Eagle Scout Award. They had their court-of-honor ceremony Friday in Poland Methodist Church. They were previous members of Pack 2 in Poland.
Cowles and Cerritelli started scouting in September 1994 as Cub Scouts. DeLost started a year later with the group. Their leaders through Cub Scouts were Elaine Morlan and Phyllis Cowles. The boys attained the highest award in Cub Scouting, Arrow of Light, in March 1999.
Cerritelli and DeLost each earned 31 merit badges and Cowles earned 33 merit badges.
Cerritelli's Eagle Scout service project was completed in May at St. Paul Church in New Middletown. He designed and constructed, with the help of fellow troop members, a rope railing along a walkway from a parking lot to an outdoor worship area to assist elderly parishioners. The project can be viewed from Calla Road on the north side of the church property.
Cowles' project was done at Humility of Mary's Villa Maria assisted living facility in Pennsylvania. He planned and marked three paths of varying lengths for the residents of the Villa to walk for exercise. The paths were measured and marked using spray paint and stencils.
A pamphlet with fitness information, directions to follow the paths, and a small map was created, printed and distributed to the residents. His project was completed in April with the help of fellow Scout members.
DeLost's project was to build a bridge in the new Poland Township Park with the help of Mike Heher, Thom Sutcliffe, Rod Emerson, his father, Bob DeLost, and his fellow troop members.
This bridge is about 40 feet long and handicap-accessible. It was built so people could walk along the scenic trail through the woods and over the stream that the bridge stretches across. The bridge was finished in January this year.
DeLost, with the help of Cowles, also marked a three-mile cross-country trail that encompasses the park.
