Expanding program
YOUNGSTOWN -- A program launched a decade ago to give city school first-graders books of their own to take home and read is being expanded to kindergarten children as well. Tom Gilmartin Sr., a former state representative who started the project, said kindergarten pupils from North Elementary were given books during a recent visit to the city's East Side Library. Every inner-city school will be asked to do the same for their kindergarten pupils beginning in 2007, he said. Appropriate books for that age group may be donated to the St. Vincent DePaul Society at 235 Wick Ave. Books should be labeled to Gilmartin's attention.
