YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY
Michael M. Carter of Campbell has been named a Collegiate All-American Scholar by the United States Achievement Academy. Carter is the son of the late Joseph and Dorothy Carter of Youngstown. The academic recognition is given to fewer than 10 percent of all college students in the country.
DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY, Pittsburgh, Pa.
Leah Marie Pappas, daughter of Anna and Tom Pappas of Poland, has been awarded membership in Omicron Delta Kappa honor society, which recognizes scholarship, leadership and academic excellence. Pappas is a junior physician assistant studies major in the Honor's College at the university. She is a 2004 graduate of Poland Seminary High School.
ETI TECHNICAL COLLEGE, Niles
James T. Gifford of Austintown has been named a Collegiate All-American Scholar by the United States Achievement Academy. The program recognizes the academic achievements of less than 10 percent of all college students in the country. Gifford will graduate in January. He is the son of the late Jack and Josephine Gifford of McDonald.
LAKE ERIE COLLEGE, Painesville
Nicole Artis of Youngstown has been named to the cheerleading squad for the 2006-07 athletic season. She is a sophomore biology major and a graduate of Chaney High School. She is involved on campus in the Student Government Association and the Black Student Union.
ASHLAND UNIVERSITY, Ashland, Ohio
Three local students have been elected to residence hall councils, which discuss policies within the individual residence halls and sponsor educational and social events for residents. Lindsay Owen, daughter of Michael and Brenda Owen of Canfield and an art education major, and Heather Wasylink, daughter of Terry and Sheila Wasylink of Cortland and a marketing major, are members of Clark Hall Council. Jessica Arnal, daughter of Marcel and Donna Arnal of Cortland, is a member of Myers Hall Council and was also elected to represent that body on the Residential Housing Association, which handles all campus housing issues. She is a hotel and restaurant management major.
WILMINGTON COLLEGE, Wilmington, Ohio
Alyss M. Hart of McDonald is serving as secretary of the Sports Medicine Leadership Council. She is a 2004 graduate of McDonald High School and an athletic training major.
UNIVERSITY OF AKRON
Nick Haidet of Alliance took first place, and Hannah Cipperley of Boardman secured an honorable mention in the 2006 Common Reading Essay Contest for freshmen. The university's Office on New Student Orientation sponsors the contest. Incoming freshmen are required to read a book that is used as the basis for class discussions and assignments in many of the university's fall semester general education courses. In addition, the freshmen are invited to participate in a writing contest based on topics from the book. This year's Common Reading Selection was "Five Finger Discount: A Crooked Family History" by Helene Stapinski.
