26 Athena pupils inducted into Builders Club
Athena pupils have already been involved in a number of community events.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Twenty-six girls at Athena, School of Excellence for Girls have been inducted into a newly formed Builders Club, sponsored by the local Downtown Youngstown Kiwanis.
Builders Club is a pupil-led middle school community service organization operating under school regulations and drawing its members, ages 12-14 years old, from the pupil body.
Former Kiwanis President Jerry Osborne worked closely with Athena last year, and it was his vision to see the establishment of a Builders Club. He involved the Athena girls in community-based activities such as the Special Olympics program held at Fitch High School, the American Cancer Society Walk-a-Thon at YSU Beeghly Stadium, Youngstown Rescue Mission and Taft Elementary School where Athena girls read to second-graders.
"I'm pleased to see that Athena has formed a Builders Club, and it will be through this vehicle that they will begin to create loyal friendships, understand the importance of planning ahead for their future and value working with the community," Osborne said.
Its motto
The Builders Club motto is "We Build," and its objectives are to provide opportunities for working together in service to school and community; develop leadership potential; foster development of a strong moral character; and encourage loyalty to school, community and nation.
Officers of the new club are: Karah Coleman, president; Jolessa Bevly, vice president; Meagen Butler, treasurer; Cherrise Daniels, secretary; and Shardae Rue, assistant treasurer.
English teacher Colleen Gregorino is the club coordinator.
Builders Club is the largest service organization for middle school pupils with more than 35,000 members worldwide.
