Mooney topples Fitch



Ellie Shields led Howland to the North Allegheny Holiday Tournament title.
AUSTINTOWN -- Junior Sarah Pelini scored 15 points Thursday as the Mooney High girls basketball team defeated Fitch, 58-46.
Junior Dayna Daltorio added 14 points as the Cardinals (5-2) won their third straight game.
Fitch juniors Rachel Rouan and Kayla Hanuschak had 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Falcons, who led at halftime, 25-24. Mooney, however, assumed a 46-38 lead after three quarters.
Nine of Pelini's points came during the third quarter. She also grabbed 12 of her team's 40 rebounds.
Hanuschak hauled in 10 of Fitch's 34 caroms.
Howland 54, N. Allegheny 46
WEXFORD, Pa. --Ellie Shields was named Most Valuable Player after leading the Tigers (6-1) to the championship of the North Allegheny Holiday Tournament.
Shields scored 26 points in the win over the host team. Alexa Williams scored 16 points and hauled in eight of the Tigers' 33 rebounds. Melissa Airhart made six assists.
Shields, Williams and Airhart were named to the tournament team.
Kristy Beatty and Maria Nolan scored 17 and 10 points for North Allegheny (7-3).
Springfield 43, Poland 42
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Springfield sophomore Rachel Kennedy scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds and junior Whitney Yaeger had 11 as the Tigers rallied from a 10-4 first quarter deficit. Ashley Tadla led Poland (4-3) with nine points.
Boardman 87,Cleveland Heights 39
CLEVELAND -- Courtney Schiffauer scored 25 points and made seven rebounds and eight assists for the unbeaten Spartans (8-0).
Darryce Moore scored 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds while Malaka Gasparek scored 13 and Stace Wahlman 10.
Liberty 39, South Range 32
LIBERTY -- Michelle Dykes led the Leopards with 11 points. Autumn Carter scored 16 points for the Raiders.
Lisbon 66, Western Reserve 45
LISBON -- Erica Sims poured in 28 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for Lisbon (7-2).
Also scoring in double figures were Emily Smith with 15 points and Caitlin Glenn with 11. Megan Reynolds made three assists.
For Western Reserve, Lainey Kekic scored 11 points, Jenna Gibbs had six rebounds and McKenzie Mowery and Ellie Sanders each made five assists.
Pymatuning Valley 40,Warren JFK 35
WARREN -- Kasey Landis scored 14 points to lead the Lakers.
For Warren JFK (3-6), Michelle Chaves scored 13 points while Samantha Brys, Angela Mills and Jamie Prezioso each had four of the Eagles' 22 rebounds.
Brookfield 46, Erie East 31
BROOKFIELD -- Morgan Bonekovic scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Brookfield (8-1) in the championship game of the Brookfield Holiday Tournament. Lauren Gentile added 10 points for the Warriors, who had a 23-7 halftime lead.
Columbiana 70, West Middlesex 20
BROOKFIELD -- Katie Douglas had 21 points and Krista Johnson added 17 for Columbiana, which held a 64-14 lead after three quarters of the consolation game of the Brookfield Holiday Tournament.
Youngstown Christian 47,Canton Heritage 33
YOUNGSTOWN -- Junior Kara Cooper scored 21 of her 27 points in the first half, including a midcourt 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Cooper also made 10 steals and three assists for Youngstown Christian (7-2). Sara Bell scored seven points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
Wednesday
BROOKFIELD -- Bonekovic and Kelly Jones scored 23 and 16 points for Brookfield in a 60-14 win over West Middlesex.
