Cop who arrested Gibsonclaims harassment
LOS ANGELES -- The sheriff's deputy who arrested Mel Gibson for drunken driving six months ago says his superiors have harassed him ever since a report detailing the star's anti-Semitic tirade was leaked to a celebrity news Web site.
Deputy James Mee was transferred to another assignment, interrogated for several hours, and investigators seized a computer and phone records during a search of his home, his attorney told the Los Angeles Times for its Thursday editions.
"His life and career would be a lot different had he not made that arrest," attorney Richard Shinee said.
Neal Tyler, a division chief who oversees the sheriff's office where Gibson was booked, denied that Mee was singled out and said he didn't know of any problems with Mee's treatment.
Mee arrested Gibson July 29 in Malibu on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. An arrest report signed by Mee and posted on the celebrity news Web site TMZ said Gibson was belligerent and quoted him as saying: "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world."
After Gibson's much-publicized arrest, investigations were opened into whether Gibson received preferential treatment, and into who leaked Mee's report to TMZ. "My client has denied he gave the report to anyone," Shinee said.
Horseback accidentbreaks actor's bones
WASHINGTON -- Edward Norton says he broke three vertebrae during a horse riding accident on the set of his new romantic drama, "The Painted Veil."
Norton said a horse threw him off while he was galloping before filming a scene for the movie, directed by John Curran, which was shot entirely in China.
"One of those horses chucked me off pretty badly," the 37-year-old actor told AP Radio News in a recent interview. "I broke my spine in like three places. I broke my back. I broke three vertebrae in my back."
"I felt like my back was horribly wrenched but I sort of assumed I was OK, and I didn't actually find out I had broken it until I went to Hong Kong," he said. "I cracked my 10th, 11th and especially my 12th thoracic vertebrae."
Norton, who received Oscar nominations for "American History X" and "Primal Fear" and starred opposite Brad Pitt in 1999's "Fight Club," is fine now. Rest, massages and swimming helped him recover.
Schwarzenegger getsbanged up on the slopes
LOS ANGELES -- The Terminator is looking all too human these days.
The shattered leg that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger suffered in a fall on an icy ski slope was the latest in a list of injuries and ailments to befall the actor-bodybuilder-politician.
The seven-time Mr. Olympia whose broad shoulders and tree-trunk legs earned him the moniker "the Austrian Oak" has a medical chart you might find at a senior citizens' home.
Schwarzenegger, who turns 60 in July, has had a hip and a heart valve replaced. He had rotator cuff surgery in 2003. A rapid heartbeat sent him to a hospital last year. One motorcycle crash in 2001 left him with several broken ribs, and another last January resulted in 15 stitches in his lip.
Now he is on crutches while the right thigh bone he broke while skiing with his family over the holidays in Sun Valley, Idaho, heals. Doctors used screws and wires to repair his leg Tuesday, and he is expected to be released from the hospital by week's end.
