Store manager charged in theft

BOARDMAN — The manager of a Boardman-Canfield Road discount store is accused of taking the store’s deposits home instead of to the bank. Police arrested Kelly Nail, 32, of Hitchcock Road, on a felony theft charge last week.

On Dec. 21, police were called to Dollar General, Boardman-Canfield Road, by the business’s district manager and the asset protection manager. These managers told police that they started an investigation on a $430 shortage from a Dec. 8 deposit and discovered that eight bank deposits from this month weren’t deposited. The money totaled about $19,400.

A police report says that when confronted, Nail acknowledged to her bosses that she had taken the money home instead of to the bank. She didn’t offer a reason to police other than that she didn’t have a ride to the bank.

Nail contacted her husband who came to the store with the money. It had been in the front seat of the family’s station wagon, the report said. Dollar General personnel verified that all of the missing deposits were accounted for but that they didn’t know if any money was missing.

Nail was lodged in the Mahoning County Justice Center.
