Teen boys shoot up house, set it on fire
The motive was likely retaliation against one of the residents.
YOUNGSTOWN -- At least five teenage boys were seen shooting at 557 E. Boston Ave. about eight hours before the home was firebombed and shot up at 12:30 a.m. Friday, police said.
Capt. Alvin Ware, head of the arson bureau, said firefighters rescued the occupants from the porch roof.
Fire was showing through the front window where the firebomb had been thrown.
Firefighters on the scene said smoke detectors alerted the occupants. National Fire Repair was called to board up the home.
At least 20 bullet holes were found in the house, reports show. Police were called to the scene to secure it and protect firefighters. Damage was estimated at 2,000.
Police were given a partial description of a vehicle that may have been involved -- black with gold rims, possibly a Toyota Camry. Casings were recovered from the street and driveway.
Retaliation
Around 3:15 p.m. Thursday, a woman at the house told police the shooting may be retaliation against her son.
Police have descriptions of at least two suspects, ages 17 and 14, in the afternoon gunfire.
Ware said another house on the street, occupied by an elderly couple, was mistakenly the target of arson last month, likely by whoever tossed the firebomb into 557 E. Boston early Friday.
He said someone set fire to the rear of the elderly couple's house, but the fire was put out by neighbors.
Ware said the couple then placed a sign in their back yard that said: "You got the wrong house."
