Off-duty officer injured
AUSTINTOWN -- Township officer Joe O'Laughlin, who was working off duty at Wal-Mart, was hit in the face and suffered a broken finger in a fight with a man suspected of shoplifting. The fight happened at 4:41 a.m. Thursday after O'Laughlin saw Craig Honkonen, 25, of Niles, leave the store with bulges under his coat, the report says. O'Laughlin tried to stop Honkonen, who leaped at him and hit him. Honkonen then ran. He was found later hiding between a garage and fence on London Drive. He was in Mahoning County jail Friday. He is charged with theft, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer, a felony.
Gunmen rob Far Less
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two gunmen wearing black hoodies robbed the Far Less Drive Thru, 1851 Oak St., around 7:30 p.m. Thursday, police said. The owner told police that the suspects both put a gun to his head and ordered him to open the register. The suspects took the cash and then ran west on Shehy Street, police said.
Man injured in crash
UNITY -- A Columbiana County man was in stable condition Friday evening after he overturned his car into a ditch. Robert Barr, 51, of East Palestine, was driving on Hunston Road in Unity Township at 12:15 p.m. Friday when the accident occurred. Barr was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.
Man shot in the face
WARREN -- A 41-year-old Warren man is being treated for a gunshot wound to the face. Jason Butler told police he answered the door to his Idywild Street home about 5:30 a.m. Thursday. He was shot in the face by one of two men he didn't know. He remains in St. Joseph Medical Center. A hospital spokeswoman said she didn't know his condition.
13-year-old injured by car
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 13-year-old Dover Road girl suffered a broken right ankle when the 14-year-old driver of a car she'd been in drove over it, police said. The boy had been driving the car east on Canfield Road on Thursday afternoon when he spotted a cruiser and made a turn onto Rogers Road and then told the girl and her brother, 16, to get out. The driver then sped away, running over the girl's foot with a rear tire, police said. The case has been turned over to the juvenile division.
