Kukura's shot gives Struthers a 43-41 victory



The game-winning basket with two seconds remaining beat Newton Falls.
STRUTHERS -- Senior point guard Matt Kukura made a 15-foot jumper from the elbow with two seconds remaining to lead the Struthers High boys basketball team to a 43-41 victory over Newton Falls.
Kukura finished with 15 points, but senior forward Josh Vlosich scored a season-high 20 points for the Wildcats (3-1). Vlosich, a senior forward, also had six rebounds. Eight of Struthers' 12 fourth-quarter points came from Kukura.
Forwards Matt Wilson and Keith Karas had seven and six rebounds, respectively. Wilson is a senior and Karas, a junior.
The win was the second straight for the Wildcats, whose other two wins were over Champion and Columbiana. Struthers' lone loss was to Liberty in overtime on Dec. 12.
For Newton Falls (1-3), senior Matt Dillon had 15 points and junior Cameron McCleary added 11.
United 41, Salem 38
HANOVERTON -- Jimmy Phillis scored 17 points to lead the Golden Eagles, who won despite a 5-for-14 performance at the foul line.
Salem also struggled, converting just 7-of-18 free throws.
Bryan Phillips added nine rebounds for United (3-2), which led 23-20 at halftime.
Greg Woolman topped Salem with nine points.
Steubenville 62, Wilson 54
STEUBENVILLE -- William Johnson scored 32 points and had 14 rebounds for Wilson.
Lamar McQueen added seven points for the Redmen, who led 33-28 at halftime but were outscored by Big Red, 19-7, in the third quarter, and 15-4 in the fourth quarter.
Dan Vogel led Big Red with 22 points, while Steve Davis added 12 and Destroy Smith scored 10.
Beaver Local 70, Chaney 60
LISBON -- Ethan Russell had 20 points for Beaver Local, which made 22 of 36 free throws to help its cause.
Senior guard Victor Toney had 21 points for Chaney (1-7), which fell behind and trailed at halftime, 41-20.
Canton McKinley 63, Boardman 37
CANTON -- Johnie Davis scored 14 points to lead McKinley (4-1, 2-0 Federal), which outscored Boardman 19-7 in the second quarter to take control.
Devron Martin led the Spartans (1-5) with seven points.
North Canton Hoover 75, Fitch 39
AUSTINTOWN -- After staying close for a half, the Falcons were out-scored 44-20 in the final 16 minutes.
Barry Shetzer scored 20 points and N'Gai Evans added 17 in support for the Vikings (5-0, 2-0 Federal).
For the Falcons (1-5, 0-2), Jon Stockman scored nine points.
West Branch 54, Canton South 48
CANTON -- Vic Pappas scored 18 points while Kyle Rockwell added 16 with 19 rebounds and Steve McNeely six points with five assists, to lead West Branch.
The Warriors (4-1, 2-1 NBC) used a 20-4 scoring advantage in the final quarter to streak away to the win.
Jake Woods and Alex Stull each had three assists for West Branch.
