Don't you just love minor-league sports team names, even if they leave you scratching your head in wonder? Case in point: the Austin (Texas) Ice Bats. Just what is an Ice Bat? Some type of rare cold-weather cave-dweller? or a Louisville Slugger made out of frozen water? A free concert by the Elegant String Quartet will be held from 4-5 p.m. at the beautifully decorated St. James Meeting House in Boardman Park. While you're there, you might as well take a drive through the lights in the park to restore your Christmas spirit.
It's not Rockefeller Center, but it's as close as you can come in Youngstown. Holiday ice skating will be held from 3-5 p.m. at Chevrolet Centre. A 25-foot Christmas tree will be set up at center ice and holiday music will be playing. Rumor has it the big guy from the North Pole will stop in. Monster Truck Mania returns to Chevrolet Center for three shows, Jan. 12-14, featuring Youngstown's own "Bad Habit," the Transformer and a gentleman known as "the Human Bomb." Tickets are available at the box office or at Gettix.net.
The Harlem Globetrotters also return to Chevrolet Centre on Feb. 1 with their Nothing Like It tour. Other events coming to the downtown arena include: professional bull riding, Jan. 5-6; freestyle motocross, Feb. 2-3; Blue Man Group, March 8; and Smucker's Stars on Ice, March 14.
