AKRON -- A nursing supervisor at Akron Burn Center confirmed the death Sunday of Charles Freeman, 81, of 788 Crandall Ave., Youngstown, who suffered burns to his face, arms and hands during a fire Nov. 28. Fire broke out in his living room from a kerosene heater.
He initially was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center then transferred by helicopter to the Akron Burn Center. He had been listed in serious condition at the burn center.
Youngstown Fire Department listed the cause of the blaze as improper fueling. Damage to the house and contents was listed as 10,500.
Gunfire reported
YOUNGSTOWN -- Numerous 911 calls about gunfire in the 400 block of West Ravenwood Avenue were made about 12:30 a.m. Saturday.
The police report said that several juveniles were standing on Ravenwood when one of the juveniles opened fire on a white Cutlass that drove by, shooting out the back window.
Police checked the area but found no suspects.
Car wreck kills driver
WORTH TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Jey Lee Jones, 41, of Sandy Lake, Pa., was pronounced dead at Grove City Medical Center by Mercer County Coroner Bradley McGonigle after a single-vehicle accident at 4:42 p.m. Saturday, according to a report from Pennsylvania State Police in Mercer.
Jones, driving a 1986 Chevrolet pickup truck, was eastbound on state Route 965, east of Bestwick Road, when the vehicle traveled off the south side of the road, then back onto the road into the westbound lane before circling back across the eastbound lane.
The vehicle struck a tree along the south side of the road. Jones was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
Funds awarded to groups
COLUMBUS -- Lt. Gov. Bruce Johnson announced that two area organizations have been awarded money from the Housing Assistance Grant Program to fund emergency home repairs, handicapped accessibility improvements, homebuyer counseling and down-payment assistance for low-income people.
The Community Action Agency of Columbiana County Inc. will receive 42,000, and Interfaith Home Maintenance Service of Mahoning County will receive 75,000.
'07 council meetings
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- City council has set its regular monthly meetings for 2007 on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month, except the months of June, July and August, when the meetings will be on the fourth Thursdays only.
Council's work sessions will be on the Tuesdays preceding the regular meetings. All meetings will start at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers at the City Building on North Jefferson Street.
Also, the regular monthly meetings of the New Castle City Planning Commission for 2007 will be at 7 p.m. the first Wednesday of each month in council chambers.
Solstice Celebration
ALLIANCE -- The John T. Huston-Dr. John D. Brumbaugh Nature Center of Mount Union College will have a Solstice Celebration from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. At 7:22 p.m. Thursday, the sun will reach its farthest point south of the equator and then head back toward Earth.
Participants will have the opportunity to "watch the sun stand still." They will investigate solstice traditions and ways to bring in the new solar year.
