Triple raise proposed for Salem super

SALEM — The board of education on Monday pulled a motion at the start of its meeting to give Superintendent Stephen Larcomb a pay raise.

Board member Joe Rottenborn asked that the motion be removed from the agenda.

The motion called for Larcomb to receive a 3.8 percent increase and a contribution toward his health care benefits as of Jan. 1, 2007; a 3.7 percent pay increase as of Aug. 1, 2007, the same base salary increase as of Aug. 1, 2007 that teachers will receive for the 2007-08 year; and payment for unused vacation time.

Larcomb began working for the board in July 2005. He has not had a pay raise since then, according to district Treasurer Alice A. Gunning.

During his tenure, Larcomb helped pass a school levy, dealt with the consolidation of schools, and negotiated contracts with teaching and nonteaching workers.

Rottenborn said that the proposal was discussed in the board’s routine executive session in the middle of the board meeting but that he could not comment on specifics.
