SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO: Santa Claus arrived in Youngstown in the most modern of conveyances in 1931, an airplane. A group of children gathered at Jones Field to greet Santa and a clown who accompanied him and to pose for this photo, which appeared in the Dec. 20., 1931, Rotogravure. An interesting sidenote for those who believe that credit buying and coupon sales are a relatively new holiday twist: In that same issue, an advertisement for Klivan's, "Youngstown's oldest credit jewelers," suggested "this Christmas Charge your Gifts," and offered Christmas Gift Checks worth 5 on a purchase of 20, 10 on 50 and 25 on 100.
