Event volunteers needed
YOUNGSTOWN -- First Night Youngstown, a family-oriented, alcohol-free Celebration of the Arts on New Year's Eve, is looking for volunteers. The evening includes music, dance, theater, art and children's activities. It is held in venues on Wick Avenue and in downtown Youngstown. Volunteers are needed for 2 1/2-hour shifts to sell buttons, check admission buttons, usher, help at performance sites, host at sites, and help with set-up and tear-down. All volunteers will receive a free button. Students may use this event for community service credit. Call the First Night Youngstown office at (330) 742-0445.
UPMC tree-lighting
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The UPMC Horizon Greenville Auxiliary will have its annual "Memories of Lights" tree-lighting ceremony Tuesday. Tree trimming begins at 5 p.m. in the main lobby with the tree lighting commencing at 5:30 p.m. on the front lawn. Refreshments will follow in the lobby. Lights and personalized angel ornaments are available for a 5 minimum donation per name, and ornaments and can be bought in honor or in memory of a loved one. All proceeds from "Memories in Lights" benefit auxiliary projects.
Holiday open house set
NILES -- Homes for Kids Inc. will host a holiday open house from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 14 at its headquarters at 165 E. Park Ave. The public is invited to join the Homes for Kids staff at the free event. Refreshments will be provided. Homes for Kids is a nonprofit foster care and community mental health agency. Christmas Bird Count
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Christmas Bird Count will be Dec. 17. This count has been conducted here since 1976. Feeder watchers are needed in the communities of Cortland, Champion, Southington, West Farmington, Bazetta and North Bloomfield. Anyone interested in helping can contact Carole at (330) 856-6160. It's not necessary to watch a feeder all day. The Christmas Bird Count information is available on the Audubon Web site, www.audubon.org, or on the Cornell University Web site, birdsource.org.
Holiday skating set
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Skating Club of Greater Youngstown is sponsoring holiday skating sessions at the Chevrolet Centre. Skaters will circle a 25-foot Christmas tree at center ice, while holiday music plays. A visit from Santa Claus and other surprises are planned. The schedule follows: Dec. 23, 3 to 5 p.m., with guest skater Sonja Williams, first lady of Youngstown; Dec. 27, 6 to 8 p.m.; Dec. 29, 3 to 5 p.m.
