Sunday, August 27, 2006 Malone football: Junior wide receiver Josh Settlemire (Howland), who caught 30 passes for 443 yards and three touchdowns last season, will help lead the receiving corps as Malone tries to improve on last year's 3-7 record. The Pioneers have experienced linebackers returning, including Steve Powell (Girard), a 6-foot-1, 205-pound sophomore. Mike Gardner begins his first season as coach and his roster of 90 players will include Austintown natives Fred Weidenthal (6-1, 205 soph., defensive back), and J.R. Miller (6-1, 240 soph. linebacker); Canfield High graduates J.J. Rousher (6-3, 170 sr. offensive lineman), and Nick Rousher (6-3, 270 fr. defensive lineman); Jon Roden of Girard (5-11, 225 soph. defensive end); Seth Sharp of West Branch (6-3, 247, sr. offensive lineman), and Ryan Farr of Boardman (6-0, 175, fr. wide receiver). Malone soccer: Senior midfielder-forward and co-captain Rick King (Howland) will be looked upon to provide leadership for the young men's squad this season. The Pioneers travel to Myers University to open the season Wednesday at 4 p.m. Malone College struggled through a difficult 4-13-1 record last year and 13 of those losses were by a single goal. King played in 17 games, scoring one goal with one assist. Another veteran will be junior defender Vic Sibera, also a Howland High graduate. Malone volleyball: Freshmen April Melquist, middle hitter, and Lauren Rider, outside-middle hitter, both Boardman High graduates, are members of the Malone team. The Pioneers, with eight veterans, expect to improve on last year's 16-21 record. Coach Tanya Hockman, starting her eighth season, has a 191-98 record at Malone. Vindicator staff report
