Howland's Datish picked one of Buckeyes' captains

The announcement was made Friday by coach Jim Tressel. Datish is joined by quarterback Troy Smith and defensive tackles Quinn Pitcock and David Patterson as captains. The four have played in a combined 128 games for the Buckeyes. Pitcock and Patterson are the only defensive starters back for the Buckeyes, ranked No. 1 in the preseason Top 25. Ohio State broke camp Friday and will begin preparations Monday for the season opener Sept. 2 against Northern Illinois at Ohio Stadium. Switches to center Datish, a 6-foot-5, 295-pounder, has played all three interior line positions at Ohio State. He will switch to center this season where he replaces Nick Mangold. Smith is 13-2 as a starter for the Buckeyes. A year ago, he had his biggest games near the finish, completing 27-of-37 passes for 300 yards and a touchdown and running for 37 yards and another score in a 25-21 comeback win over rival Michigan. In a 34-20 win over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, he rushed for 66 yards on 11 carries and completed 19-of-28 passes for 342 yards and two touchdowns. Pitcock started all 14 games last season and had 28 tackles, including one sack and three for a loss of yardage. Patterson, who started 10 games in 2005, had four sacks and 7.5 tackles for negative yardage.
