Warrants issued in football-game slaying

Thursday, August 24, 2006 YOUNGSTOWN — City Prosecutor Jay Macejko has issued warrants for the arrest of Anthony M. Caulton, 25, of Youngstown, in the shooting death of Larry C. Jones during a peewee football game at the former South High School stadium Saturday. The warrants charge Caulton, who had been described by police as both a suspect and a person of interest in the case at different times, with the murder of Jones, having a weapon under disability (while under indictment for a drug offense in common pleas court) and conveying a weapon into a school safety zone. All are felony counts, Macejko said. Police have been searching for Caulton since the shooting, and he remained at large today. Jones, 31, of Ravenwood Avenue, was shot multiple times around 3:45 p.m. in front of more than 600 people attending the Volney Rogers Youth Football league game at the stadium. Jones and his assailant were both attending the game, and police said they fought briefly in the stands before the assailant pulled out a gun and shot Jones. Jones jumped over a handrail to the sidelines and fell to the ground. Police said the attacker followed and shot him again as he lay on the ground. Jones' family told police that the dispute had nothing to do with the game but was related to an ongoing dispute between the two men over a domestic issue. If convicted, Caulton faces 15 years to life on the murder charge, up to five years on the weapons disability charge and one year on the school safety zone violation, Macejko said.
