The Edsels to perform at Pa. park
Thursday, August 24, 2006 THE VINDICATOR YOUNGSTOWN — The Edsels, the vocal group best known for the 1961 hit "Rama Lama Ding Dong," will headline a doo-wop weekend at Conneaut Lake Park in Pennsylvania. The group will perform Sept. 3 at the park's Dreamland Ballroom. The group is led by Marshall Sewell, a Campbell native who is an original member of the group. Another original member, Jimmy Reynolds, left the group two years ago. He continues to perform Edsels songs with his five sons, who are known as The Reynolds Brothers. A Vindicator story on July 30 gave the false impression that Reynolds' act is the only version of the Edsels still performing. Sewell, who holds the rights to the name The Edsels, says his group is very much in demand. "I would like the residents of Youngstown to know that I have not retired from singing and have no plans to do so," said Sewell. "The Edsels may be rattling just a little bit, but we are still rolling." Sewell's group — which also includes Maurice Jones, Danny Friendly and Reuben Robinson, all of Youngstown — have a busy schedule. They performed at a doo-wop show at Playhouse Square in Cleveland on May 20, the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton on Aug. 4, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland on Tuesday. They will be at Freedom Hall Amphitheatre in suburban Detroit on Friday. George Jones is the only other surviving member of the original Edsels, and he is retired. Brothers Harry and Larry Green are both deceased. Tickets to the doo-wop weekend at Conneaut Lake Park are $14 at the door, and $12 in advance. Call the park at (814) 382-5115 for more information.
