Crestview, Badger secure season-opening victories



Warren JFK's girls defeated Newton Falls, 6-1.
NEW WATERFORD -- Greg Bing scored all three goals as Crestview High opened its season with a 3-0 victory over Oak Glen (W.Va.) Tuesday.
Justin Kleinknecht, Aaron Stewart and Matt Twaddle each had an assist.
Badger 4, Newton Falls 0
VERNON -- Lee Matson scored two goals, while Zack Panak and Mike Rondini each added one for the Braves (1-0). Matt Wilson, Ethan Hall and Jeff Ashcrot had an assist apiece for the Braves. Badger had 12 shots on goal compared to four for the Tigers (0-1).
Late Monday
BOARDMAN -- Trevor Ragan scored two goals for Boardman in a 5-1 win over Niles.
Eric Bouslough, T.J. Hosa and Vince Calautti scored one goal each for the Spartans. Vic Kudav, Jason Franko, Sam Ragan and Trevor Ragan each had one assist. Matt Moore and Jason Franko combined for 10 saves.
Joe Merlo scored Niles' goal.
JVs: Boardman, 5-0.

NEWTON FALLS -- Roxy Hoerig scored three goals as Warren JFK opened its season with a 6-1 victory over Newton Falls.
Kellie Kovac added two goals and Jerrica Cooper had one for the Eagles.
Ellie Engstrom scored the goal for the Tigers (0-2). Goalkeeper Bonnee Clute had eight saves.

VERNON TWP. -- Amelia Deraway, Jenna Miller, Shawna McNeely and Tiffany Snyder each scored a solo goal in the season opener for each team.
JVs: Badger, 3-0.

NEWTON FALLS -- Elizabeth Yuricek scored two goals for the Raiders (1-0). Jordan Bahn and Elena Ware each had a goal. Goalkeeper Stephanie Cross had 13 saves.
Kirsey Collins scored two goals to pace the Tigers (0-1). Julie Davis added the other goal. Bee Wentworth had an assist. Rebecca Humburger had eight saves.
Boardman 2, Niles 2
BOARDMAN -- The close game saw Niles' Carly Cicero score a goal for a 1-0 lead midway through the first half. Sophomore Jamie Avona of the Spartans tied it on a 25-yard direct kick 15 minutes into the second half. Boardman then took a 2-1 lead.
Niles fought back and scored to tie the game with 1 minute, 25 seconds remaining.
Garfield 7, Springfield 6
GARRETTSVILLE -- Allyson Berry and Carrie Ritzler scored two goals apiece for the Tigers (0-1). Amber Uscianowski and Mellisa Huffman each had one. Courtney Pauline had nine saves.
