Tuesday, August 22, 2006 LOCAL Babe Ruth roundup *WILSON, N.C. — Matt Shelton's single with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Bo Slemons with the winning run, as the Youngstown All-Stars defeated Roseburg, Ore., 9-8, at the Babe Ruth League 14-year-old World Series Monday. Youngstown improved to 3-0 in pool play after defeating Shelton, Conn., 11-6, and Nash County, N.C., 7-0, earlier in the tournament. Youngstown led Roseburg, 4-0, through three innings Monday, but the Oregon team rallied for an 8-6 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Kyle Vaclav started the rally with a lead-off single and, after advancing to third on a wild pitch, scored on a single by Anthony Zorella. Zorella tied the score on a throwing error, which pushed Slemons to second. With one out, Evan Bollinger singled, moving Slemons to third. Mitchell Huff came on in relief for Roseburg and Shelton greeted him with the game-ending hit. Adam Shrodek was the winning pitcher in relief. Starter Shane Parks pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run. Youngstown had 11 stolen bases in the game and a triple play in the second inning. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Shelton caught a fly in right-center, then threw home to Zorella for out No. 2. Zorella then saw the running going from first base to second and zipped the ball second baseman Sam Porter for the third out. Youngstown is scheduled to conclude pool play today at 5:30 p.m. against Meridian, Miss. A win would guarantee Youngstown a bye in the first round of the championship bracket. They wouldn't play until Friday. *CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. — The Youngstown Babe Ruth 15-year-old all-stars lost to Jefferson Parish, La., 8-1, in the final pool play game of the tournament for the local team, Monday night. There were no details available from the game. Despite the loss, Youngstown (2-2) should qualify for the championship bracket as the third place team in the American Division. That game will be played Thursday at 5 p.m., but their opponent won't be determined until the end of play today. McDonald coaches McDONALD — The McDonald Board of Education on Monday hired James Fortune as junior high football coach. Other coaches hired as volunteers were A.J. Saul and Steve Durbin. Chaney tickets YOUNGSTOWN — Tickets for Chaney's varsity football game at Austintown Fitch will be on sale Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the new Chaney High gymnasium, located on Overlook Ave. The game is 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Fitch Falcon Stadium. Boxing canceled AKRON — Boxing scheduled for Saturday night at the John S. Night Center has been canceled because of slow ticket sales. The event was being produced by Richards & Hayes Ringside Productions. Double eagle YOUNGSTOWN — Devin Ferrell, a member of the Boardman High girls golf team, double eagled the 391-yard Par 5 No. 4 hole at Mill Creek Park North Course. Her brother Jerry and father Jerry witnessed the shot. Corrections *Mooney center Zak Dietz's named was misspelled in Sunday's high school football preview. *Ursuline High will play Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary in a varsity football game Oct. 27 at Mineral Ridge High's stadium. The schedule in Sunday's football preview noted the game was scheduled for Stambaugh Stadium, which was the site listed on the most recent schedule provided by Ursuline prior to publication. NATION Little League roundup *SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Portsmouth, N.H., defeated Lake Charles, La., 5-0. Jordan Bean tossed a two-hitter and Portsmouth scored five runs in the fifth inning to break open a scoreless game. Bean struck out 12 and was helped by solid defense as the New England region champs (2-1) clinched a berth in the next round. Beaverton, Ore. 2, Columbia, Mo. 1 Devin Dejardin singled home the game-winning run and Beaverton, Ore., benefited from timely double plays to beat Columbia, Mo., 2-1, and advance to the next round.
