NEW ON VIDEO This week's DVD releases

Tuesday, August 22, 2006 "Poseidon": The new year gets off to a bad start for a boat load of passengers on a doomed luxury liner, but at least the pain's over quicker for them than for the castaways stuck watching this bilge-filled remake of 1972's "The Poseidon Adventure." Director Wolfgang Petersen emphasizes repetitive action and special effects over character, making it hard to care much for the little knot of survivors struggling upward deck by deck after a 150-foot wave overturns their vessel. Kurt Russell, Richard Dreyfuss and Josh Lucas lead the cast. The movie comes as a bare-bones single DVD or in a two-disc set with featurettes on the upside-down set design and the rigors of shooting an ocean flick in a studio soundstage, plus a History Channel documentary on giant rogue waves. DVD set, $34.99; single DVD, $28.98. (Warner Bros.). "Silent Hill": Another dumb horror movie that debuted as the No. 1 weekend flick at theaters lands on DVD. Clocking in at an excessive two-hour running time, director Christophe Gans' tale set in a bizarre ghost town offers some fairly creepy images but devolves into a shrill blood fest. Radha Mitchell and Sean Bean star as the adoptive parents of a weird little girl who goes missing in the title town, mom tracking her daughter through an eerie burgh of fog and doomed souls while dad is in a parallel-universe version that's sunny and calm. The DVD comes with behind-the-scenes segments examining set design, casting, stunts and creature effects. DVD, $28.95. (Sony). "From the Big Apple to the Big Easy: The Concert for New Orleans": Marking the upcoming one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and the devastation of New Orleans, a two-disc set chronicles the eclectic benefit concert held at Madison Square Garden three weeks after the disaster. The lineup of both musicians and those introducing the acts is remarkable, and the choice of songs is a testament to the performers' love of New Orleans, their grief over the tragedy and their conviction that the city can endure and recover. Among the selections: Simon and Garfunkel singing "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "Homeward Bound"; Bette Midler doing "I Think It's Going to Rain Today"; and John Fogerty, introduced by former President Clinton," rocking through "Born on the Bayou." DVD set, $24.99. (Rhino). "Just My Luck": Lindsay Lohan proves unlucky in script choices with this dud about a woman who kisses a stranger at a costume party and magically swaps her boundless good fortune for his consistently rotten luck. The DVD includes deleted scenes. DVD, $29.98. (20th Century Fox). Associated Press Copyright 2006 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
